Brighton
Brighton was seen in two of the Carry On films, and as it's a lovely seaside town, it was the obvious choice of venue for some of our events.
Firstly, it was the destination of the work's outing in Carry On at Your Convenience. Much of the seafront can be seen in the film, as well as plenty of action on the Palace Pier, and all of it's bars and funfair rides.
The next visit to Brighton was for the film Carry On Girls, where it doubled as Fircombe, preparing for it's first beauty contest. The exterior of the hotel, owned in the film by Joan Sims, was in reality owned by Carry On Sergeant star, Dora Bryan. She was still living there when we first visited in 2006, and kindly joined us at our event.
The pier which was used in Carry On Girls, was closed in 1975, and tragically burned down in 2003. It's 'skeleton' remains to this day as an eerie reminder of happier times.
