In 2007 we held two small events in Bloomsbury, or more accurately Holborn, as it was near this location that Kenneth Williams had lived for most of his life.
Apart from a few years during the 1960s when he lived in Marylebone, Kenneth was born and raised, and eventually died, in the Bloomsbury / King's Cross area of London.

June 24th 2007
The Calthorpe Arms, London
Special guests: Patricia Franklin and Jacki Piper.
Event organised by Brett Tremble
Our day started with an organised walking tour around Bloomsbury revisiting many old haunts of Carry On star Kenneth Williams. From his former home to the school he attended, it was a wonderful and indeed surreal morning to retrace his steps.
Onto the Calthorpe Arms for our Carry On fun! We were thrilled to be joined by two Carry On actresses, Jacki Piper and Patricia Franklin, who met with us for the first time and have both become dear friends of the Whippit Inn.

Patricia Franklin had unforgettable roles in five Carry On films creating some iconic moments including the farmer’s pregnant daughter in Carry On Camping and Miss Fircombe saboteur Rosemary in Carry On Girls. The afternoon provided a rare insight into Patricia’s career, in which she told of other unfamiliar aspects of her career such as the play Uproar in the House, in which she starred with Carry On legends Peter Butterworth and Joan Sims.

Carry On Again Bloomsbury

With Carry On historian Robert Ross, and Hattie Jacques biographer Andy Merriman.
Event organised by Brett Tremble
Just a few months later, we returned to The Calthorpe Arms, and were joined by two more great actresses from the Carry On films. The wonderful Rosalind Knight, and the brilliant Liz Fraser.
As well as these two fabulous ladies, both Carry On Historian Robert Ross, and Hattie Jacques biographer Andy Merriman were in attendance. |
Andy Merriman talked to us about his new book on the life of the great Hattie Jacques.

Rosalind as Student Nurse Nightingale in Carry On Nurse

Rosalind Knight appeared in two of the very early Carry On films; Nurse and Teacher. Today she delighted us with tales from both films, as well as so many other films in which she's appeared.
Always a delight to spend time with, Rosalind is a firm favourite amongst the fans, and it was great to see her back with us once again in 2019. |
Sadly, in December 2020, a little more than a year after she last visited us at the Inn, Rosalind passed away. She will be remembered always as a wonderful actress, and a thoroughly fabulous lady.
Liz Fraser is a legend of British film comedy. As well as her four Carry On roles; Regardless, Cruising, Cabby and Behind, she has appeared in St. Trinian's, Hancock, a couple of Confessions films, I'm All Right Jack and many other TV shows & films.... and she seems to have a story about each and every one of them.
What a delight for us to hear these honest and frank recollections, from such an amazing lady. This was to be Liz Frasers' only visit to the Inn. She sadly passed away in September 2018. |

Here is a link to the first part of a video record of our afternoon at the Calthorpe Arms. Part One was a walking tour of Windsor, which some of us took the day before this event, but parts 2 to 5 (all under 10 minutes long, as was the YouTube limit back in the day) are of the event itself.
