Carry On Up the Prom

September 17th 2006
The New Madeira Hotel, Brighton

Special guests: Sally Geeson, John Clive, Pat Durkin, Dora Bryan and Hugh Futcher.
Event organised by Brett Tremble and Paul Stephen

Our first trip down to Brighton, the spiritual second home of the Carry On films, occurred in 2006. The fun started with a winkle on the pier and a wander around the smashing frontier, taking in filming locations from Carry On At Your Convenience and Carry On Girls.
The lovely Sally Geeson headed the panel and shared a lot of stories of her time working as an actress. From the Carry On films to Bless This House, via Norman Wisdom and The Fenn Street Gang, Sally has graced many British comedies with her presence.

Joining Sally on the day was her Carry On Abroad love rival John Clive. Another familiar face in countless British Comedies, John was living abroad at the time and made a rare appearance to join us at the event. He was a truly entertaining guest and it was a joy to welcome him.

Carry On favourite Hugh Futcher made his Whippit Inn event debut with us and regaled us with tales of his Carry On career, including stories of his location work in Brighton for Carry On At Your Convenience. Having appeared in no less than seven Carry On films, Hugh is always a delight to listen to.

Friend of the Whippit Inn, Patrick Durkin made his second and final appearance with us. Never a dull moment with Pat around. Those who stayed around for a quick drink afterwards were treated to a flurry of jokes and witty one-liners in the bar area of the hotel. Quite a raucous Carry On indeed!
And finally, we were lucky to be joined by the wonderful Dora Bryan making an impromptu appearance. Dora lived only a stone’s throw away from the venue and it was a delight that she should share her Sunday afternoon with us. It was an unexpected treat for all concerned, even the organisers! Dora was truly one of a kind and her time with us will be a memory that we will all treasure for a very long time.
It was great to see Dora at our event, and almost three hours after she arrived, she had to leave us.... as she'd only popped out to buy a newspaper.
